Third-quarter net profit was 1.031 billion euros ($1.06 billion), above an analyst consensus of quarterly net profit attributable to shareholders of 997 million euros, according to LSEG data. The bank's third-quarter net profit was down 8% on the previous year and up 35% on the quarter, amid ongoing struggles in the lender's investment unit. It also said it had scope to release up to an additional 3 billion euros in capital and would increase and accelerate shareholder distributions. The provision for credit losses was 200 million euros, compared to 350 million in the same quarter of last year. Analysts at UBS said Deutsche Bank had delivered a "major improvement in capital" and "robust operational performance," flagging that pre-tax profit of 1.723 billion euros was 9% above consensus.

Fully-electric models made up 21% of sales in the EU in August, the first time that they have made up more than one fifth of all sales, the ACEA said. In the first eight months of 2023, nearly 1 million fully-electric cars were sold in the EU. Overall, EU car sales were up 21% in August, which is typically a slower month for car sales, making it the thirteenth consecutive month of sales growth as the auto industry recovers from pandemic-related supply chain issues. Rolex’s Perpetual Planet initiative has partnered with CNN to drive awareness and education around key sustainability issues and to inspire positive action. “Ancient trees in towns and cities are vital for the health of nature, people and planet,” Naomi Tilley, lead campaigner at the Woodland Trust, said in a press release. “They give thousands of urban wildlife species essential life support, boost the UK’s biodiversity and bring countless health and wellbeing benefits to communities.”According to a 2020 study, ancient trees are in global decline. Despite their demonstrated resilience across centuries, ancient trees might struggle to adapt to the rapid environmental and climatic shifts anticipated in the years ahead. “Most ancient trees aren’t protected by law,” continued Tilley.

Rumors of a curse have persisted since Howard Carter and others found Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. But because he'd been present at the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb a few months prior, rumors of a curse started to swirl. But dozens of Egyptian laborers contributed physical and skilled labor to excavate Tutankhamun's tomb. As the decades passed, some scientists wondered if there was something deadly lurking in Tutankhamun's tomb: fungi. Last week, total rail volume from Canada to the U.S. was down 12%, according to The Association of American Railroad's latest rail traffic report for the week ending July 22. This was an improvement given the first full week of the strike saw a 46% decrease in rail trade from Canada, and the second week suffered a 36% decrease. Rail traffic from Canada into the U.S. had a third-straight weekly drop as a result of the on-again, off-again strike at the West Coast Canadian ports. When the first strike ended on its thirteenth day, delays for rail containers were estimated at 39 to 66 days. Adding another day with the on-again, off-again strike last week, brings the congestion removal tally up to 42-70 days.

The fate of operations at West Coast ports in Canada will be decided on Tuesday, July 25, when rank-and-file members of the International Longshoremen and Warehouse Union Canada will vote on a tentative deal with port ownership. The plan to send the deal to a full union vote comes after a week of confusion and turmoil at the ports. For the vote, work will stop from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Pacific Time on Tuesday across all ports. Weekly rail trade data aggregated by the American Association of Railroads reveals a total decrease of 82.4% in rail trade over the course of the 13-day strike. When the first strike ended on its thirteenth day, delays for rail containers were estimated at 39 to 66 days.

Photographer: Ben Nelms/Bloomberg via Getty ImagesThe supply chain is in turmoil again with International Longshore & Warehouse Union West Coast Canada members walking off the job after a key union caucus voted down a tentative deal that had temporarily ended the West Coast ports strike last week. Rob Ashton, president of the ILWU Canada, said in a statement that it did not believe the recommendations had the ability to protect union jobs. His group estimated that the first strike would cause an average 6-8 weeks of supply chain disruption before conditions would return to normal. The National Association of Chemical Distributors told CNBC some chemical companies are expected supply chain congestion until October as a result of the strike. Critical chemicals that go into food, cleaning, water purification, and personal care, among many others, flow through the West Coast ports of Canada and down to the United States.

Darryl Dyck | Bloomberg | Getty ImagesThe strike at the Canada's West Coast ports is over, after both the labor union and port ownership accepted a deal presented by federal mediators. ILWU Canada union workers were expected to be back on the job for the 4:30 p.m. Pacific time shift on Thursday, but undoing the damage to the supply chain from close to two weeks of strike will take weeks. While the production ramp down at the ports was seen immediately, the congestion as a result of the 13-day strike will have a lasting effect on ports. The International Longshoremen and Warehouse Union of Canada begin its strike on July 1. The ports strike has already damaged the U.S. supply chain.

June 22 (Reuters) - European shares opened lower on Thursday on fears of continued monetary policy tightening, with London stocks falling on uncertainty about the size of the Bank of England's interest rate hike later in the day. The pan-European STOXX 600 index (.STOXX) fell 1.2% by 0716 GMT, while the FTSE 100 (.FTSE) index shed 1.2%. The BoE is set to raise interest rates for a thirteenth time in a row, a day after inflation data came in higher than expected again, but bets were almost evenly split between a 25-basis-point and 50-basis-point hike. Rate-sensitive technology shares (.SX8P) dropped 1.2%, while a 1.9% fall in auto stocks (.SXAP) led declines. Alexander Manzyuk | ReutersGold demand soared to an 11-year high in 2022 on the back of "colossal central bank purchases, aided by vigorous retail investor buying," according to the World Gold Council. Annual gold demand jumped 18% to 4,741 tons (excluding over-the-counter or OTC trading) across the year, the largest annual figure since 2011, fueled by record fourth-quarter demand of 1,337 tons. "Central bank net purchases in Q4 totalled 417t, lifting H2 total buying to 862t. The majority of the central bank buying in 2022 came from emerging markets, with the Central Bank of Turkey the largest buyer at a record 542 tons. This means that the purchasing power of non-U.S. buyers is reduced and harms global gold demand.

Trump's allies repeatedly rejected Kevin McCarthy as House speaker, displaying his power's limits. A week of House speaker chaos revealed one thing about Donald Trump: He can't get his MAGA house in order. The drama started on Tuesday, and it wasn't until Friday that McCarthy managed to make headway in flipping members' votes. "The president needs to tell Kevin McCarthy that, 'Sir, you do not have the votes, and it's time to withdraw.'" House members who are responding to the MAGA base have no reason to fear Trump on this, he said.

Former Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows asked a South Carolina judge to block a subpoena demanding his testimony before a Georgia grand jury investigating possible criminal interference in the 2020 presidential election. Meadows' request Monday afternoon came hours after U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas temporarily delayed a similar subpoena that the same grand jury issued to Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C. Meadows, a former Republican congressman, resides in South Carolina. Bannister said the subpoena was moot because it had required Meadows' appearance before the grand jury on Sept. 27. The grand jury in this case does not have the power to criminally charge individuals but can recommend charges.
There’s even a name to describe the irrational dread of the date: paraskevidekatriaphobia — a specialized form of triskaidekaphobia, a fear of the number 13. What we do know, though, is that both Friday and the number 13 have been regarded as unlucky in certain cultures throughout history. Dan Brown's "The Da Vinci Code" popularized the erroneous theory this is the original of the Friday the 13th superstition. If we dig deeper, though, we also find evidence that both Fridays and the number 13 have long been regarded as a harbinger of good fortune. “Every time I’ve won an award I’ve been seated in either the 13th seat, the 13th row, the 13th section or row M, which is the 13th letter.
